HIGICC Workshops

Workshops will be held on Sep. 23, 2009 at various locations

Introduction to GIS

Presenter: Kaylene Keller (NOAA)
Duration: 7 hours (8:15 am to 4:45 pm)
Class Size: 15
Location: University of Hawaii Manoa EMPRINTS, Biomedical Sciences Room A210
Cost: $120
Parking: Parking is available in the UH Parking Structure for $4 for the day, allow five to ten minutes to walk from the structure to the Biomedical Sciences building. Click here for a copy of the UH Parking Map.

Description: The principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will be presented using ArcGIS 9.3. Workshop participants will learn the basic capabilities of the ArcMap application through hands-on exercises. Participants will learn to create maps, query data and conduct basic overlay analysis using existing data sets, as these tools may be useful for planners and others working with GIS data. This workshop is designed for the new GIS user, no previous experience required.

Introduction to Mobile GIS – Field Data Collection and Mapping

Presenter: Sam Aruch
Duration: 7 hours (8:15 am to 4:45 pm)
Class Size: 12
Location: Sheraton Waikiki
Cost: $120
Parking: Parking is available at the hotel. Cost is $8 for the day with validation stamp. Ask at the conference registration desk for the validation stamp.

Description: GIS/GPS This workshop focuses on mobile GIS tools, techniques and applications for field data collection that may be useful to GIS professionals, planners and others. Participants will learn how the global positioning system (GPS) works as well as how to collect and download position measurements and feature attributes using a GPS receiver. In addition, participants will gain hands-on experience using GPS receivers with PDAs and ArcPAD software to take GIS data into the field, update it, and return it to the GIS database. Throughout the module, participants will learn best practices for implementing GPS data collection and mapping.

ENVI Interoperability Tools for ArcGIS – Remote Sensing for Applications in Planning and Public Works

Presenter: Thomas Harris (ITT)
Duration: 7 hours (8:15 am to 4:45 pm)
Class Size: 15
Location: ESRI Honolulu Training Room
Cost: $120
Parking: Parking is available in the building for $5 for the day. Click here for directions to the ESRI Training Room and parking details.

Description: New ENVI Interoperability Tools for ArcGIS - Remote Sensing for Applications in Planning and Public Works

Join us for a seminar on extracting valuable information from imagery with ENVI for export to ArcGIS.

Image analysts and image scientists - from GIS users to defense and intelligence professionals and planners – rely on ENVI analysis tools to locate, isolate, and extract features from all types of imagery. Join this hands-on seminar to learn how to use ENVI's automated workflows to:

  • Extract vehicles, buildings, and other man-made objects
  • Isolate transportation and infrastructure
  • Categorize natural features
  • Produce accurate, repeatable results
  • Generate vector layers for your GIS

All user levels are welcome to join these sessions. Some basic experience with ENVI is helpful, but not required.

Integrating a GIS-based Approach for Marine Field Surveys

Presenter: Lisa Wedding (UH)
Duration: 3.5 hours (8:15 am to 11:45 am)
Class Size: 15
Location: Sheraton Waikiki
Cost: $60
Parking: Parking is available at the hotel. Cost is $8 for the day with validation stamp. Ask at the conference registration desk for the validation stamp.

Description: Applying a spatial approach to marine resource management is gaining recognition with the increasing implementation of marine managed areas, ocean zoning, and no-take marine reserves. Accordingly, employing a spatial approach using GIS can provide invaluable support to inform marine management and coastal research for planning and other purposes. This workshop will be divided into a field trip and computer lab session. Participants will first learn to conduct marine field surveys. These field marine data sets and geo-photos will then be integrated into GIS in the lab and a summary report on the marine surveys will be compiled. This workshop will take participants through the complete process of planning marine field work, data collection, analysis and synthesis. Participants will gain field experience working with geospatial technology to aid in marine spatial analysis. Some experience with ArcGIS ArcView will be helpful.

Start to Finish Workflow with Trimble GPS

Presenter: Karyn Nolan (Pacific GPS)
Duration: 3.5 hours (8:15 am to 11:45 am)
Class Size: 25
Location: Sheraton Waikiki
Cost: $60
Parking: Parking is available at the hotel. Cost is $8 for the day with validation stamp. Ask at the conference registration desk for the validation stamp.

Description: This workshop will demonstrate all aspects of a data collection project with GPS Pathfinder Office software and TerraSync Professional Field Software that GIS professionals, planners and others may utilize.

How To Georeference Digital Media - Creating a Sense of Place With a Camera and GPS

Presenter: Derek Masaki (USGS)
Duration: 3.5 hours (1:15 pm to 4:45 pm)
Class Size: 15
Location: Sheraton Waikiki
Cost: $60
Parking: Parking is available at the hotel. Cost is $8 for the day with validation stamp. Ask at the conference registration desk for the validation stamp.

Description: Geotagging is the process of adding spatial location information to digital media. GPS and digital cameras are enabling technologies that empower individuals with the ability to quickly ascertain and record the exact location of an event or observation captured in the field, and other information that would be useful to GIS professionals and planners.

Topics included: planning a project, creating a data dictionary, collecting data, GPS navigation, GIS data update, and export to GIS or CAD.

Hardware/Software Needs: Digital Camera (user provided)
