Samoa-Tonga Earthquake and Tsunami

On September 29, 2009 a large earthquake (magnitude 8.0) struck the Samoa-Tonga region. The quake triggered a tsunami that reached Samoa and American Samoa within 20 minutes and caused major damage and loss of life. The tsunami weakened as it spread across the Pacific but was recorded at other sea level monitoring stations.
